As the
region’s first co-educational independent school, Greenhill School provides exceptional
opportunities for academic achievement, intellectual growth, artistic fulfillment,
physical development, moral awareness, and community responsibility. The school
brings together students of considerable abilities; teachers with expertise in their
disciplines and child development; a curriculum that embraces the liberal arts and
sciences, fine arts, and athletics; and a steadfast commitment to diversity in its
broadest sense.
Greenhill’s program is organized into three divisions (Lower School, Middle School,
and Upper School), coordinated by an integrated curriculum that provides a spectrum
of challenging opportunities throughout. To achieve educational excellence and intellectual
vitality, the program incorporates a full range of teaching styles and activities,
with special emphasis on interdisciplinary and team approaches to student learning
and growth. The fine arts and athletics are integral to the Greenhill experience.
Both curricular programs and extracurricular activities in sports and the arts encourage
the discovery of new disciplines, the development of new skills, and the establishment
of new relationships. Greenhill graduates can expect to be highly competent in all
domains of the curriculum and fully prepared for the academic rigors of collegiate
life.
As each student gains from Greenhill’s stimulating environment, so does each contribute
to the learning process, to a debate or basketball team, to student government,
to musical and dramatic productions, to younger students as role models, and to
a variety of community service activities both on and off campus. These opportunities
foster confidence, creativity, independence, responsibility, intellectual and moral
integrity, and a courageous and generous engagement with life. In addition, because
the Greenhill community seeks and supports diverse perspectives and values, Greenhill
students are challenged to achieve high levels of understanding of themselves and
respect for others. In keeping with this challenge, the school affirms its role
as a community committed to the core principles of honor, respect, and compassion.
Greenhill believes these principles are essential to its mission, an important part
of which is to develop sound moral character and to increase empathy. All members
of the community affirm these principles and strive to embody them on a daily basis.
Greenhill’s faculty is exceptional in the breadth and depth of its experience and
its enthusiasm for teaching. The faculty is the heart of the school. Greenhill’s
teachers at every level are specialists who establish high standards and give students
the tools and encouragement to meet them. It is a teacher’s responsibility to balance
the challenges of the Greenhill environment with a sensitivity to the individual.
An essential relationship develops in the classroom where the teaching is personal,
exciting, and creative, and extends into the life of the full school community,
where the teacher is engaged, accessible and supportive.
Founded in 1950, Greenhill is governed by a voluntary board of trustees, most of
whom are current parents. It is led and administered by a head of school who, with
the faculty and staff, implements all school policies and programs. Greenhill upholds
its motto, Per Aspera Ad Astra, Reach for the Stars, and its commitment to educational
excellence achieved within a community of diverse and talented individuals. Endowed
with a rich legacy of innovation, open-mindedness, and courageous independence,
the Greenhill community enthusiastically embraces the challenges of contemporary
education.
The school values its relationship with each family. When a student enters Greenhill,
the School also begins a partnership with the student’s parents. It is a partnership
built upon trust, respect, and a shared commitment to the intellectual and emotional
well-being and growth of the child. In addition, parents share time, talents, and
resources with the school in support of its educational excellence.
Thus, the people, programs, and relationships that comprise the Greenhill experience
prepare our graduates not only for college, but also – and more importantly – for
education in all guises and settings.
