KINDERGARTEN
The class meeting includes a daily routine of using
numbers and number concepts through the use of a daily calendar, weather
graphing, tallying, work with odd/even numbers, coins, and place value.
This meeting time also includes guided and shared reading experiences,
and community building opportunities through games and sharing. Songs
and poems combine with other vocabulary-building activities such as the
daily news to begin each day in a relaxed, but stimulating environment.
The
kindergarten writing program includes journal writing, writer’s
workshop, write aloud, and shared writing. The interactive approach
allows for individual instruction in both fluency of the written word
and handwriting.
Handwriting, a small motor skill, is developed and refined through games
and activities that exercise specific muscles in the hands and fingers.
Students receive short phonics lessons.
The
literacy project allows
children to conduct extended, in-depth research on a phenomenon of
interest to them; this investigation may link to the current unit of
study. Children investigate
ideas and pose questions to generate theories and predictions concerning
possible answers to their questions. The teacher guides the children to
develop a culminating activity or event through which the children share
what they have learned.
Math activities introduce
numeration, data, measurement, patterns, and other concepts. Real-life
math experiences are also integrated into the broader curriculum.
Cooperative science
experiments are conducted throughout each week. Discovery and
exploration of scientific principles also occur through projects at
center time.
Free-choice center time
begins with an initial planning and recording process to provide a
structured format. These centers include math, art, literacy,
woodworking, dramatic play, sand and water, writing, science/discovery,
cooking, blocks, manipulatives, gardening, snack shop, and others.
The children attend specials classes for varying times: music; physical
education; art; and Spanish. Kindergartners also go to the main library
once a week for instruction about how the library is organized and how
to find things in the library. Kindergartners check out one new book
each week to take home.
