Q. Will there be any openings in the grade to which my child is applying?

A. Pre-kindergarten will have 28 new openings and kindergarten will have at least 36 new openings.

The number of new openings in first grade and primer will depend upon the number of kindergarten children who move into primer. Our primer class is typically about 20 students. Generally, we admit approximately 15 students between the two grades.

In grades 2-12, we do not open new classes. However, we do add new seats to grades 5 and 9. In grade 5, we typically have 10-15 openings. In grade 9, we typically have 20-25 openings. The number of new students that we accept in each of these grades depends upon our rate of attrition. While we have no way to predict what the attrition rate will be for next year, in the past two years it has averaged four percent. Our re-enrollment contracts and deposits are due in late February. We will know the approximate number of openings in each grade at that time.

Q. Do siblings and children of alumni have preference?

A. While our current families and alumni are very important to our community, Greenhill is not the school for every child. Therefore, sibling and/or alumni status does not ensure a child’s admission to Greenhill. If the Admission Committee is faced with two equal candidates, one of whom is a sibling or alumni child, the sibling or alumni child is offered the open position. We do not, however, give automatic priority to siblings and children of alumni.

Q. At what age level do you begin?

A. A child must be four years old by September 1 of the year he/she would begin pre-kindergarten at Greenhill. Our pre-kindergarten is a full day program from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Q. Do you have a waitpool?

A. Yes. All students in the waitpool have gone through the application process. The waitpool does not carry over from year to year and there is no pre-application waitpool for any grade level, including pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. A student's placement in the waitpool one year does not influence admission decisions for any following year in which the student reapplies to Greenhill. The waitpool is disbanded after the second week of the school year and the admission process begins again.

Q. Does Greenhill have a religious affiliation?

A. No. Greenhill is a non-sectarian school. We accept students of any race, color, religious, national and ethnic origin, and offer all the rights and privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.

Q. Do Greenhill students wear uniforms?

A. No. There is a dress code to which all students must adhere while on campus and attending school-sponsored activities.

Q. What is the student/teacher ratio?

A. In pre-kindergarten and kindergarten the student/teacher ratio is 8:1. In primer through grade 4 the average ratio is 16:1. In the Middle and Upper Schools, the average ratio is 18:1. In Lower School (pre-k - grade 4), there are teaching fellows who have recently graduated from college assisting the lead teachers.

Q. What is the boy/girl ratio?

A. We attempt to keep the boy/girl ratio at Greenhill as close to 50:50 as possible. This does not mean that we accept students who are not qualified to attend Greenhill in order to keep the ratio equal.

Q. Does Greenhill provide transportation?

A. No. Many families form carpools. The Parents’ Association and Division Office Coordinators help put together carpool groups at the beginning of each school year.

top

Q. Can my child apply after the deadline?

A. We are unable to evaluate applicants to pre-kindergarten and kindergarten after the deadline unless Group Observation spots are still available.

For Grades 1-12, we understand that due to unforeseen family circumstances, some students may not be able to meet the deadline. We will try to accommodate these families by reviewing late applications for waitpool consideration at best.
