2011 Greenhill / Luke's
Locker 6 Mile Relay Summary
Dallas, TX – The Southlake Carroll Dragons
redefined what it means to have a deep cross country
program. In claiming to top two spots on both the girls
and boys 5A/4A races at the 2011 Greenhill / Luke's
Locker 6 Mile Relay, Coach Justin Leonard's runners
began the season with a bang. Each squad's performances
spoke volumes about their seasonal goals – a Texas state
title and top finishes at the Nike Cross Country
National meet.
With
all seven returning varsity runners in the mix, the
Southlake boys became the first team in meet history to
break the thirty minute mark with their 29:52 clocking.
Cross country fans might recall the amazing Dragon teams
of Colby Lowe and C.J. Brown (their 2006 foursome at the
relay ran just over 31 minutes), but this year's
foursome of Goleston, Gilley,Chavez and Sasone proved to
be something special. Taking the lead from the start,
their nearest competitors ended up being their very
teammates. For a team that's looking to end The
Woodlands' four year reign as 5A state champions, the
Dragons made a statement at this year's relay. McKinney
Boyd, Norman (OK), and Justin Northwest rounded out the
top five in the large school race.
Not to be outdone by their
male teammates, the Southlake girls outraced competitors
from perennial 4A power Highland Park, and top 5A
schools Coppell and The Woodlands. They, too, claimed
the first two spots in the competitive large school
race. Kriegshauser, Roe, Roe, and Harper teamed up for a
convincing thirteen second win in 36:22 over their
teammates. The girls proved that their #17 pre-season
national ranking is for real. While other teams such as
The Woodlands and Highland Park showed their depth in
the junior varsity races, no one could touch the top
Dragon varsity teams on race day.
The
small school races were highlighted by the Kaufman boys
and their successful defense of their team championship.
Wearing the yellow singlets as defending champs, the
team of Lowe, Cruz, Nunoz, and Lopez steadily chipped
away at Episcopal School of Dallas's lead and finished
first in 32:29. Independent school Hockaday claimed the
girls small school race title after Jacqui Choucair came
from behind to help her squad finish six seconds ahead
of Sanger.
With
approximately 1,500 runners on hand from 61 competing
schools, this year's 6 Mile Relay was as big as ever.
Despite the unbearably hot conditions, many schools did
not shy away from this racing opportunity. For the
Southlake Carroll Dragons, perhaps it proved to be their
first step in a long successful season that includes
major stops in Austin and Portland, Oregon.
