Hornets Storm Through Castle Hill Tournament
(8/26/00)

The boys varsity squad won seven straight matches over the weekend to win the Castle Hill Tournament and improve its season record to 17-0.

The Hornets began the event by defeating St. Mary's Hall, Friday. In the rematch of last year’s SPC finals, Greenhill continued its victorious play, shutting down St. Mary’s Hall in two games 25-10, 25-13.

In the weekend’s second match, the Hornets beat St. John's 25-21, 25-16. The squad followed that victory with a win Trinity Valley, 25-16, 25-9.

On Saturday, Greenhill finished pool play by beating Fort Worth Country Day 25-14, 25-11, San Antonio Christian School 25-18, 26-27, 15-4. Against San Antonio Christian, the first hard-fought match of the tourney, Greenhill lost its first game of the weekend, but rebounded to beat SAC in the third and final game of the match.

Finishing first seed in its pool, Greenhill headed to the Gold Division

playoffs (4 top teams).  In the semi-final round, the Hornets faced nemesis St. Mark's but beat them soundly 25-9, 25-8.

The St. Mark’s victory set up the finals match against host Castle Hills, which had not yet lost a match in the tournament. Hoping to redeem a finals defeat against Castle Hill in last year’s event, Greenhill came out strong on defense and won 25-17, 25-22.

Jeremy Jacobs was named MVP.  David Klein and Justin Kosoris were voted all-tournament.

  • Jeremy had 121 assists, 17 aces, and 14 blocks, and 29 digs.

  • Nikhil Pole lead all attackers with 43 kills, and 35 digs.

  • Zishan Yousuf had 14 kills and 22 digs, while Dorian Geisler added 10 kills and 22 digs.

  • Justin Kosoris had 23 kills, 28 digs, and 11 aces.

  • David Klein had 31 kills and 29 blocks.

  • Kevin Kirksey had 13 kills and 8 blocks.
