2001
Season Summary ~ From the Coach
The 2001 boys’ tennis season was very adventurous. There were a myriad of emotional moods throughout the 2001 campaign. The season started off slow and in limbo -- bad weather, no home tennis courts, and no year-round tennis players. Almost in the same instance, the bad weather got better and the tennis courts were completed. Opportunity presented itself for a lot of conditioning, drills, strategy, and match play.
With teams in the conference with a roster full of year-round tennis players, it would be tough to win an SPC title. The 2001 boys' tennis team fought hard in every match and gave every ounce of their resolve in each competition. As the year progressed, the tennis team needed to win four matches against north zone teams. Early in the SPC counter games, the boys lost three matches and needed to run the table to qualify for the Division I bracket. The team prevailed in its next couple of matches and it came down to one more match. A victory was scored with play right to the last counter match. The victory was a great feeling for the whole team. It proved that hard work, perseverance, and confidence go a long way.
In the SPC tournament, we were the No. 4 seed and drew the No. 1 seed of the south in the first round. The boys were close to winning a second match against the No. 1 seed but due to three losses, the match was cut short. In the second round, the boys won two matches and almost pulled out a victory by pushing one match to a third set. Finally, in the third match, the boys were victorious and finished seventh in the Division I SPC tournament.
This season will be remembered by all that were part of it, as one that took a lot of preparation, effort, and determination to achieve the goals the team set. Two players will be leaving either through graduation or relocation. They will be greatly missed! Several young 8th graders are set to make a great impact on the 2002 campaign. Combined with current players committed to working on skills from this point, the 2002 boys' tennis team hopes to better itself for an improved finish in 2002. Thanks for everyone's support!!!
