Season Summary ~ From the Coach
What a year!!! The varsity boys' season began in early January with a few athletes in preseason training. On the minds of the coaching staff at the time was not only how to replace four seniors from an outstanding 2000 squad, but also how the new assistant coaches would work together.
Goals from the onset of the season were simple - WIN SPC. The coaches reviewed last year's results and came up with training programs that would best fit our athletes' needs and attempt to gel the veterans, newcomers and rookies into a group of 30 individuals with one common goal - team first, individuals second.
We knew that if we were going to compete with St. Mark's for the SPC title, we would need to score more points in the field events and put an emphasis on the relays.
After competing in nine invitationals throughout the season with tough public and private school competition, the Hornets were primed for the MISC and SPC conference meets. The entire team peaked at the right time and we received courageous performances from many individuals. In securing the MISC title, Greenhill produced seven individual champions and won all three relays, in addition to gathering 26 medals.
On home turf, the Hornets matched the Lions of Preston Road point for point over the tough two-day conference competition and prevailed with the School's second SPC track & field title in three years. The competition came down to a very exciting finish, as the Hornets crossed the finish line in first place to the home-crowd chants of "S - P - C!" The Hornets had three individual champions with Kent Siri in the pole vault, 110HH, 300IH, and won the all-important 4x100 and 4x400 relay races. Greenhill's victory over St. Mark's was the result of a total-team effort with 21 individuals receiving
All-SPC honors by competing in multiple events.
Highlights of the 2001 season included: new records in the 4x200 relay and 300IH, second-place team finishes in the
TCA-Cedar Hill and Bishop Lynch meets, winning the MISC and SPC titles.
This is a special group of young men that were second to none and demonstrated throughout the season that they had the heart of a lion and the dedication, attitude, competitive nature and passion of a true champion.
