Season Summary ~ From the Coach
After loosing more than half of the 2000 squad to graduation, transfers and other reasons, the entire coaching staff faced a difficult task of molding together seven veterans, four newcomers, and nine rookies into a competitive team.
Right from the onset of the season, the squad demonstrated many of the necessary elements of a championship team. The Hornets finished in the top three in the team standings of every meet throughout the season as they prepared themsleves for the most important part of the season - the MISC and SPC conference meets.
Greenhill totally dominated the MISC meet with eight individual championships and 22 all-conference medal winners. In the SPC Championships, with expected tough competition from Hockaday and St. Stephen's, the Hornets demonstrated that they were the best team by scoring in 15 of 17 events. Greenhill had six individual champions, set four meet records and received 19
All-SPC medal winners.
Baylor-bound April Holliness demonstrated that she was a true champion with first-place finishes and meet records in the long jump, triple jump, 100m and 4x100 relay. Kim Briant demonstrated her versatility by earning
All-SPC honors in six events - triple jump, pole vault, 100LH, 300IH, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay. Ashley Wellington led our distance runners by capturing the 3200m title and scoring in the 800m, 1600m, and 4x800 relay.
This was a very special group of young ladies who were very coachable and demonstrated the necessary elements of a true champion (teamwork, effort, commitment, courage, and discipline).
Highlights of the 2001 season included: capturing the MISC and SPC titles; finishing second or third in the team standings in six
invitationals; setting four SPC meet records in the long jump, triple jump, 100m and 4x100 relay; and setting 10 new school records throughout the season including the 4x100, 4x400, triple jump, long jump, pole vault, 100, 200, 1600, 3200 and sprint medley.
The entire coaching staff of Tom Holodak, Stacey Johnson, Mark Hough, Janice
Lamendola, Jim Domer, Jason Yaffe, Doug Williams, Christina McDowell, and Louise Thompson did an excellent job of working together with a common goal and provided the team with the proper direction in their quest for a championship. The entire team and coaching staff would like to thank the entire Greenhill community for their support throughout this banner year!!!
