Squads sweep public school competition (8/14/01)
The Greenhill girls' volleyball program swept Garland and
Arlington Bowie in both varsity and junior varsity action on
Tuesday evening. The home victories mark the beginning of this
year's fall sports competitions at Greenhill School.
In
the early varsity match, Greenhill defeated Garland 15-4,
15-12. Elizabeth Barnwell
and Autumn Erickson each
recorded six kills for the Hornets, while the senior Lauren
Schanbaum notched 15 assists.
Barnwell also added seven aces between the two games.
Arlington
Bowie proved to be tougher competition in the 7:00 p.m. match,
as they handed the Hornets a 7-15 loss in the first game.
Greenhill stormed back in the second game 15-7 and finished off
Bowie with a convincing 15-3 third game to begin the season with
a 2-0 record.
Barwell
and Erickson again led the
Hornets in the second match of the evening with 12 and 11 kills
respectively. Schanbaum more
than doubled her first match performance
in assists, with 34 against Bowie.
In
junior varsity competition,
Greenhill fought a fierce Garland team for a 9-15, 15-8, 17-15
three-game victory. The Hornets' junior varsity squad, which is
made up of all freshman, blanked Bowie in the first game before
dropping the second game 8-15. Greenhill improved to 2-0 on the
season with a 15-9 win in the final game against Bowie.
