Greenhill's Rosenfeld claims 4th SPC golf title

05/01/2002

By ROBBY NISENFELD / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News

GRAND PRAIRIE – Greenhill senior Matthew Rosenfeld closed out his high school career by capturing his fourth consecutive Southwest Preparatory Conference individual championship Tuesday at the Riverside Golf Club.

Rosenfeld fired a pair of 68s, carding an 8-under 136 over two days to win the tournament by 10 strokes over Arlington Oakridge's Evan O'Donnell (146).

Rosenfeld trailed Tulsa Holland Hall's Terence Begnel by a stroke after the opening round. Rosenfeld, however, used five second-round birdies to cruise past Begnel, who shot a second-round 80.

"I always set goals, and I thought I could win four years in a row," said Rosenfeld, who will head to Texas next year on a golf scholarship.

"I didn't know the competition would be this tough this year. The course set up pretty easily yesterday, but it was a lot tougher today [because of the wind]. I just came out today and put together a good, solid round, and that's all I could do."

Rosenfeld seized control of the tournament with birdies on three of four holes on the back nine – holes 11, 13 and 14 – which included sinking a 25-foot birdie put on No. 13.

Houston Kinkaid won the boys tournament, and Oklahoma City Casady won the girls tournament. Elizabeth Davis of Austin St. Andrew's was the top girls individual with a two-round total of 166.
