Last week's Southwest Preparatory Conference girls track
title came down to the 4x100-meter relay.
Junior Kim Briant, the anchor leg, ran through the finish
line first, as Greenhill won the race by more than nine
seconds. The gold-medal finish helped Greenhill win its second
consecutive girls track championship. Greenhill, competing at
home, finished 13 points ahead of Episcopal of Houston.
"A lot of the motivation this year was that the girls
wanted to send coach [Tom] Holodak out in fashion," assistant
coach Mark Hough said. "We turned track into a team sport."
Holodak, 48, is retiring after 20 years of coaching.
Assistant coach Stacy Johnson will take over for Holodak next
season.
Briant turned in an outstanding performance, winning the
300 hurdles, long jump and 4x100 relay. She also finished
second in the triple jump. Sophomore Mallory Williams
surprised the coaching staff by placing first in the 100 and
second in the 200. Sophomore Lindsey Jaggers set a new school
record in the 400, finishing the race in 1 minute, .73 seconds
to finish second. Senior Ashley Wellington supplied points by
placing third in the 3,200, and junior Autumn Erickson won the
high jump.
Greenhill's boys track team finished fifth. David Knowles,
a senior, won the high jump, and senior William Mitchell
finished second in the discus throw and third in the shot put.
Grace Wu is a senior at R.L. Turner High School. She is
an intern at the Northwest Morning News for the
semester.
