Hornets open 2002 track season
(03/10/02)

With some butterflies in their stomachs, the Greenhill varsity track teams opened their season on March 9, 2002 at the St. Mark’s Invitational. The meet represented an opportunity for all athletes to test their physical condition and for the coaches to gain a preview of the outdoor season to come. While it’s clear that the teams has their work cut out for them if they are to successfully defend their SPC titles, the meet did offer several bright spots. Even with an incomplete squad, the Hornets ran to a second-place team finish in the girls competition and a fifth-place finish in the boys meet.

The girls were led by twenty point performances from veterans Kim Briant (’03) and Ashley Wellington (’02). Briant ran away from the competition in the 300 hurdles and led off the first place 400 and 1600-meter relay teams. The victorious relays teams consisted of Briant, Shannon Mullen (’05), Megan Fortenberry (’05), and Mallory Williams (’04) for the 400 and Briant, Mullen, Tiffany Carlson (’05), and Lindsay Jaggers (’04) in the 1600. Meanwhile, earlier in the competition, Wellington established a new school record of 12:13 in the 3200 meter run before going on to win the 1600 race, too. Cressita Bowman (’02) was another gold medallist in the pole vault. Promising performances by Williams, who ran to victory in the 200-meter dash, and a handful of freshmen runners were also noteworthy.

The boys competition marked the debut of several new team members, notably Brandon Arrington (’04) in the sprints and jumps. Trading his baseball cleats for track spikes, Arrington placed second in the long jump and in the 100-meter dash. Several of his teammates fared well in their respective events, most notably the boys 400 meter relay team (Courtney Leffall ’03, Courtney Elder ’03, Travis Blakely ’03, and Arrington), Will Mitchell (’02) in the discus, and David Knowles (’02) in the 800 meter run.

The Hornets won’t have too much time to dwell in this performance. They will have another chance to test their skills at the Trojan Relays in Addison on Friday, March 15. Field events start at 4:00 p.m. and running events at 6:15 p.m.
