Hornets
set to defend title
(08/13/02)
The Greenhill girls volleyball team finished the 2001 volleyball
season as Southwest
Preparatory Conference (SPC)
champions. The Hornets
finished last season with a 36-8 record and will carry over a 20
game win streak to the 2002 season.
Returning
five out of six starters, Greenhill will look to defend its SPC
title. The offense will be led by senior Autumn Erickson
and junior Elizabeth Barnwell, who both finished last
season ranked in the Dallas Morning News top 10
statistical categories in kills. They ended the season with 406
and 427 kills respectively. Junior transfer Amanda Smith
will challenge for the setting position. Smith enters Greenhill
with a strong academic background and has worked out with the
team at individual camp and at the Long Beach team camp.
The
Hornets’ first line of defense will be regulated by Barnwell,
who finished 2001 ranked in the Dallas Morning News top
ten in blocking with 106.5. Greenhill’s leaders in digs from
last season will be returning, as senior Kim Briant
finished the 2001 season with a team best 328 digs and Erickson
finished with 324.
The
team will play a tough non-conference schedule, which includes
Pearce, Marcus, Red Oak and Arlington Martin. Greenhill will
also compete in the local Arlington Classic and Northwest
tournaments, before traveling to Chicago in September for the
Nike tournament. Greenhill will face Allen in the opening round
of the Duncanville Tournament of Champions on Aug. 23. The SPC
championships are scheduled for Nov. 8-9 in Fort Worth.
