Hornets
struggle with tough schedule
(09/03/02)
Greenhill has
struggled this pre-season playing below expectations, combined
with some tough tournament draws and a challenging
non-conference schedule.
Greenhill
opened the Northwest Tournament this past weekend with 4-A
powerhouse East Texas Pine Tree and lost 15-21, 15-13. The
Hornets faced Montgomery in its second and fourth matches of the
day, before defeating Pampa in two games.
On
Tuesday night, however, the Hornets battled back with an
impressive two-game victory against 5-A Marcus and got strong
play from its team leaders. Senior Autumn Erickson recorded 11
kills and 10 digs in the match. She also served two aces against
a team traditionally known for its ball control. Junior Liz
Barnwell also stepped up her play recording nine kills, two solo
blocks and 10 digs. Senior Kim Briant had five kills and 12 digs
in the match that took 53 minutes for the first game alone,
which Greenhill won 16-14 after 10 game-point opportunities.
Greenhill
was no match for Red Oak, who coming off its Northwest
Tournament
championship, played with much confidence after also beating
Marcus.
After
the match Red Oak head coach Arthur Stanfield said "My
players could not play much better than that."
The
Hornets had just 11 kills in the match as Red Oak won 15-3,
15-3. Greenhill
will resume play at home on Thursday against Dallas Christian at
6:00 p.m.
