Hornets
take four in Houston
(09/02/03)
The Greenhill boys varsity volleyball team traveled to St. John's
this weekend to play four matches. The Hornets continued their
reign over SPC opponents, going undefeated and raising its
season record to 11-0.
The first match pitted Greenhill against Episcopal High School of
Houston, with the Hornets winning 25-7, 25-10, 25-11. Experience
was again the key to our victory, as everyone got plenty of
playing time for Greenhill. The squad was able to run its
offense very effectively, and the defense has been
consistantly unstoppable. Jeff Klein had 6 kills, Gabe
Oros recorded 4 kills, as Chris Rogers led the defense
with 5 digs. Jared Scheib and Marshall Sosland had 4 digs each.
Greenhill faced Houston St. John’s in the second match of the
day. The Rebels had a couple of hitters that they were
able to frustrate with defense. Marshall Sosland and
Josh Ernst had 7 digs, and Jared Scheib had 8. Gabe Oros
led the offense with 8 kills, while Brian Dorber had 25
assists. The Hornets were victorious in three, winning
25-12, 25-22, and 25-15.
In the third match, Greenhill lined up against non-conference
opponent Clear Lake High School. Many of the Hornet
starters were able to rest during the Clear Lake match, due to
the fact that Clear Lake is a new program that is still
building. Greenhill served aggressively, and ran a quick
offense that was too advanced for the opponent to stop.
Greenhill won 25-6, 25-12, and 25-6, behind Jeff
Klein’s 11 kills, Chris Rogers’ 7 digs, and Alex da
Silva’s 10 assists.
In the final action of the day, Greenhill played St. Mary's Hall. The
Hornets entered the match thinking they would be facing the
toughest opponent of the day, but again, were able to dispose
of them rather handily, 25-23, 25-10, and 25-13. Brian Dorber
had 21 assists, Marshall Sosland and Gabe Oros had 6
kills each, Michael Swartz had 4 blocks, and Alex da
Silva had 9 digs.
The Greenhill team is much more experienced than most teams we'll
face this season. Although they are not a big team, they
are quick, and are able to maintain a high level of
defense throughout most matches.
This week Greenhill travels
to Trinity Valley on Tuesday and to St. Mark's on Friday.
Both of the matches should be close, as Trinity Valley
has likely improved since the Hornets faced them two weeks ago
at FWCD. Greenhill has yet to face St. Mark’s this season.
