Boys volleyball brings home SPC
championship
For the fifth year in a row the Hornets brought home a
championship. En route to the victory were several
hard-fought, well-attended matches that made this year’s
championship one for the record books.
In the
first round of SPC, the Hornets faced Forth Worth Country
Day. The Hornets came out on fire, beating the Falcons
decidedly in the first two games (25-10, 25-12). Strong
offense from Marshall Sosland and Jeff Klein (8 kills each)
proved too much for the Falcons. However, in game three, the
Falcons rallied briefly behind strong fan support. The
Hornets effectively suppressed the run with some clutch
defensive plays, winning 25-20.
Next, the Hornets faced Trinity Valley School, the only team
that took the Hornets to 5 games during regular season play.
With the Hornets losing the first game 21-25, it looked like
history would repeat itself in the playoffs. However, the
Hornets won the second game by 25-19. In game three TVS once
again got off to a great start, but strong play from middle
blockers Jeff Klein and Michael Swartz (11 blocks, 10 blocks,
respectively) and stellar defense from Jared Scheib and Clark
Chaney (12 digs each) kept the game close. As the score leapt
into the mid and then high twenties, the fans for both teams
were on the edge of their seats. In the end, the Hornets were
victorious in game three, winning 29-27. After this pivotal
game, the Hornets clinched the victory easily (25-11) and
headed to the Finals on Saturday.
Once again the Hornets faced Casady School in the finals. The
game was well-attended by Greenhill faculty and students.
Greenhill won the first game 25-19. But Casady rebounded and
won game two (24-26). The Hornets would not be denied
though. Jeff Klein put on an offensive exhibition, notching
15 kills and 6 blocks, while team MVP Brian Dorber had 38
assists and 3 aces. The Hornets’ signature defense made a
huge difference as well, with Jared Scheib and Chris Rogers (8
digs each) making it hard for Casady to get kills when they
needed them. The Hornets won the last two games 25-19, 25-18,
once again clinching the SPC Championship.
