Hornets
start season with wins
(08/20/03)
The Greenhill girls varsity volleyball team
continued to play well against tough competition, as the
Hornets hosted JJ Pearce and Justin Northwest High School on
Tuesday night.
After a
slow start in last Friday's home opener against Trinity
Christian Academy, Greenhill rallied back to win the next
three games to start the season 1-0. The Hornets were led on
Friday night by senior Elizabeth Barnwell, who registered 15
kills, 3.5 blocks, 16 digs and 4 aces.
On
Tuesday's first match-up against an athletic JJ Pearce squad,
the smaller Hornet team played outstanding defense, swung
aggressively and had superior ball control.
The
Hornets won convincingly in three games. The Hornets were
paced offensively by Barnwell with 9 kills, sophomore Alex
Feagin with 7 kills and senior Mandy Smith with 24 set
assists. Smith and Feagin also chipped in 12 and 13 digs
respectively.
In
the Hornets second match of the night, Greenhill defeated
Justin Northwest 26-24, 25-20, 25-22 to move to 3-0 on the
season. Alex Feagin led in kills with 16, while Mandy Smith
and junior Caitlin Andrew each added 6. Smith continued to
distribute the ball well, adding 39 assists. Defensively, the
Hornets were led by junior Jessi Howard’s 12 digs.
Greenhill
will continue its pre-season work in the Garland Tournament
this weekend, starting with pool play at 5:00 p.m. at Naaman
Forest High School on Thursday.
