Hornets improve
to 2-0;
prepare for Kinkaid with bye week
(09/09/04)
The
Greenhill varsity football team will enjoy the benefits of a
bye week, following hard-fought victories in the first two
weeks of the season.
Most
recently, Denton Liberty Christian forced Greenhill to
overtime, where the Hornets converted a dramatic
fourth-and-long situation for a first down as junior
quarterback Jeffrey Boyd scrambled with a fumbled snap and
connected with senior Andrew Mack on the 2-yard line. Two
plays later, senior James Rahardja plunged into the end-zone
to tie the game at 27-27, while junior Sam Coffman kicked the
game-winning extra point.
In front
of the crowd at Brinkmann Field, Greenhill fell to an early
14-point first quarter deficit to Denton Liberty, but the
Hornets were able to march down the field to bring the squad
within a touchdown at halftime. Rahardja rallied the team by
opening the second half with a 73-yard kickoff return for a
touchdown and rushing for another touchdown in the fourth
quarter, while the Greenhill defense held Denton Liberty to
just one touchdown after the first quarter.
The
Hornets opened the 2004 season with a road win at First
Baptist Academy (FBA) on Aug. 27. Greenhill jumped out to an
early 10-point lead with the help of a forced fumble by
sophomore Matt Oh on FBA’s second offensive play. The Hornets
held the Saints scoreless through three quarters, as Greenhill
rolled to a 16-6 victory.
Greenhill was able to prepare for the regular season by
scrimmaging Trinity Christian Academy (TCA) and Episcopal
School of Dallas (ESD), offering Greenhill a chance to work on
the implementation of its new offensive and defensive schemes.
Greenhill will return to action on Sept. 17, when the teams
begins Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) action at
Houston Kinkaid. After the first two games of the season, the
Falcons are carrying a 2-0 record into their Sept. 10 game
against Houston Pius X.
