Sveinsson Competes at Penn Relays
Greenhill freshman
Chelsey competed at the Penn Relays, finishing in third
place in the 1-mile race.
Chelsey's 4:43.5 mile is now ranked the #3 in US history
for 9th grade girls (closing in on Mary Decker's
national record). The two girls ahead of her finished #1
and #2 at the HS Outdoor National Championship last
year.
She ran hard from
the gun, taking the pace out for the first three laps as
the eventual winner from Ohio sat on her shoulder. That
girl, last year's runner up, made her move with 300
meters to go and Chelsey could not respond and was
passed by another girl with 200 to go. She tried to
rally and caught the second place girl, but then got
nipped by her at the line.
This year's race
at the Penn Relays was especially competitive, given
that previous winners have run: 4:50 (2007), 4:48
(2006), 4:50 (2005), 4:48 (2004), 4:42 (2003), 4:55
(2002), 4:54 (2001) and 4:54 (2000).
