The softball
team ended its season with a win over its most
competitive rival, Hockaday, at the Southwest
Preparatory Conference championships with a “picture
perfect ending,” according to senior Caitlin Andrew.
This year,
SPC softball championships consisted of 16 teams, with
two divisions of eight teams, and a bracket style
tournament. The 16 teams are seated into the tournament
by regular season conference results.
In the first
round of SPC, Greenhill played St. John’s. The Hornets
went through one rough inning in which they gave up
seven costly runs to the Mavaricks. Caitlin was a
perfect three for three at the plate, yet St. John’s won
9-2.
The Hornets
pulled together in the second round with a 4-3 win
against Kinkaid. In the fifth inning, senior Lydia
Turner came to the plate with the game tied and hit an
over the fence homerun with junior Kelly Dorber on base.
Lydia’s homerun was one of a few among all of the SPC
teams at the tournament, and the only one for Greenhill.
The Hornet’s
third game was the battle for fifth place at SPC against
Hockaday. Freshman pitcher Liz Vaughn held Hockaday to
no runs, allowed only five hits, and struck out six
batters. In the sixth inning, junior Starley Richard hit
a double, which scored Liz. The Hornets ended the game
with no errors and a 4-0 victory over the Daisys.
“It’s going
to be difficult to replace the current seniors next
year, but we hope to use their legacy and leadership to
continue our success in the future,” said Lisa Burton,
head softball coach.
