SPC Championships
May 3-4, 2007
Dallas, Texas
Greenhill athletics
celebrated its most accomplished school year in history
as varsity teams combined for a total of five Southwest
Preparatory Conference championships, including titles
in girls’ volleyball, boys’ cross country, girls’
soccer, boys’ tennis and girls’ track and field.
Greenhill has won 34 SPC titles over the past 10 school
years, the most of any coed school in the entire
conference.
Greenhill finished
the spring season with every team -- baseball, softball,
boys’ tennis and girls’ tennis -- all competing for
conference titles in the Division I brackets of their
respective tournaments. The boys’ tennis team finished
as SPC champions behind the all-conference performances
of freshmen Michael Vutam and Jake Golman, and junior
Conor Biller. The team entered the tournament is the No.
2 seed in the North division, but was able to avenge the
team’s only loss earlier in the season to Holland Hall
by defeating Dutchmen in the championship game.
The girls’ track and
field team finished as conference champions for the
sixth time in the past seven years as the girls held the
lead in the final race of the day by setting a
conference record in the 4x400 meter relay. Seniors
Timmy Johnson, Meera Krishna, Joi’ Windham and Toi
Windham combined for a total of 12 all-conference
performances, including two conference records and four
gold-medal finishes. Sophomore Andrea Rahardja was a
member of the record setting 4x400 meter relay team,
finished first in the triple jump, second in the pole
vault, and fifth in both hurdle races. Sophomore Morgan
Calhoun earned all-conference honors and a gold medal as
a member of the 4x100 meter relay team. Joi’ Windham
finished her career at Greenhill with two school records
and one conference record, and Toi’ Windham graduates
with four school records and three conference records.
The boys’ track and
field team had its best finish since 2001 as the Hornets
finished third at the SPC championships. Senior Michael
Trejo earned gold medals in both the 1600 and 3200 meter
runs, while setting a school record in the process in
the mile. Senior Willie Woods had two all-conference
performances, finishing third in both the 100 and 200
meter sprints. Senior Garrett Dobbs and junior Taylor
Short each earned all-SPC honors in the triple jump,
while sophomore Travis Stull finished with a silver
medal in the pole vault.
The girls’ tennis
team entered the Division I bracket as the No. 3 seed in
the North division, and won its first match against
Saint Mary’s Hall. The Hornets were defeated in the
second round, but bounced back in its final match of the
season and defeated Hockaday in the final match of the
season to third place at the SPC tournament. Freshman
Shelci Bowman and senior Blair Golman each earned all
conference honors for the Hornets.
The softball team
finished conference counter games with a 5-2 record and
entered the Division I bracket at the SPC championships
as the No. 3 seed in the North. After dropping a close
game in the first round to Kinkaid, Greenhill defeated
Hockaday in the second round before falling to St.
John’s in the fifth-place game. Junior pitcher Liz
Vaughan and junior short stop Taylor Johnson were both
all-conference selections following the conclusion of
the tournament.
Senior short stop
Zach Tobolowsky and junior pitcher Greg Lyons earned
all-conference honors in baseball as the team finished
in sixth place at the SPC tournament. The Hornets ended
the conference counter season with a 3-2 record and
second place in the North division. Following a
first-round loss to St. Mark’s in the Division I
tournament, Greenhill defeated St. Andrew’s in the
second round and lost to Kinkaid for a sixth-place
finish.
The girls’ lacrosse
team finished the SPC tournament in seventh place,
behind the all-conference play of senior Chandler Rough
and junior Christina Marmol. The boys’ lacrosse team
finished conference play tied for fifth place, and was
recognized by the Southwest Lacrosse Officials
Association with the Patterson Award that is awarded to
the team that carries the best spirit of the game.
Seniors Jeffrey Talmadge and Robert Tobolowsky earned
all-SPC honors, while Talmadge was named the Most
Valuable Player in the state all-star game.
The golf team
finished the season with a 13th-place finish
at the SPC golf tournament at Bear Creek. Senior Royal
Gamber earned low score for the team over the two-day
meet, sophomores Alex Gupta and Brad Girson rounded out
Greenhill’s top three scores at SPC.
The boys’ crew team
nearly finished in third place in its preliminary heat
at the state regatta in Austin to conclude the season,
but was hampered by a technical error near the finish
which dashed its hopes of qualifying for the finals. The
girls’ crew team also attended the state regatta and
gained valuable experience for a young squad.
