  • THE PLASTIC CHALLENGE continues

The Plastic Challenge which was initiated in March for 7 weeks officially ended on Earth Day. Students collected soft  plastic waste in TREX recycling bins to send back to TREX to recycle into outdoor decking. At Greenhill, students collected 280 lbs of plastic waste in just two months. TREX awarded a $40.00 gift card to use for green initiatives. Student are encouraged to continue bringing in their soft plastic waste. However, this should also create awareness that we use an excessive amount of plastic and should try to reduce our use.

  • E-Recycling Day

February 21st 2009 was a big success. About 3 tons of electronic waste was recycled at this event. Out of this 3 computers and 20 flat screen monitors were put into re-use. They were in working condition and taken away by volunteers and/or Greenhill staff. What a great idea! Thank you to all the volunteers who lifted, packaged and checked all the electronic waste on a cold Saturday morning! Please contact Jeff Bode at jb@moncor.com

  • No Idle Zone event - February 17th 2009

Stickers were handed out at carpool. Please contact JoAnn Brown at jbrown@suiteinteriors.com

2008-2009 UPDATES

Community Garden:

Green Team volunteers harvested a bumper crop of organic basil from the Community Garden in November and this basil is used to produce fresh pesto in our own kitchen. Volunteers are always needed year round to help maintain the garden – planting, weeding, watering and harvesting.

No Idle Zone Initiative:

Since the No Idle Zone Initiative was kicked off on April 22nd 2008 on Earth Day, there has been a considerable decrease in idling in the carpool line.  As the weather cools down please continue to turn off your engines while waiting in the carpool line.

Campus Recycling:

New recycling bins are being placed all over campus to encourage all users to recycle plastic bottles, aluminum cans and paper cups. However, these bins will not take glass.

BYOB:

The water fountains all over campus have now been re-configured with water filters and goosenecks. This will make the process of filling water in reusable water bottles much easier and also provide filtered water that is close in taste to bottled water.

Water Coolers:

Ten 5-gallon water coolers are now available in the kitchen to borrow for events on campus. This will reduce the amount of plastic bottles used and wasted on campus. The Friday on the Hill was a huge success in this regard and was one of the first major events that made the effort to be very green.
