CAMPUS INITIATIVES
People use resources and energy in habitual ways
without stopping to think about the consequences. Some
campaigns to address such habits and promote
eco-friendly alternatives are in the works.
- Plastic Bottle Recycling: We're already recycling water bottles
and paper. Thousands
of sports drinks are consumed each year on our
campus. We are working on a campaign to recycle those as well.
- BYOB: Each year in the U.S. we use
more than 10 million barrels of oil to produce
bottled water – and even more is used to
transport all those bottles. 40% of bottled water, including
top-selling brands, is merely filtered tap water
that is no safer or healthier than the stuff we
get practically for free out of our tap. We know the first "R" is Reduce – so even
better than recycling water bottles is creating
a culture where BYOB is the norm.
- No-Idle Zone: Idling for one hour burns nearly
one gallon of gasoline. Gasoline is costly, its production and
use has significant environmental impact, and
there is not an endless supply – three good
reasons not to waste fuel with unnecessary
idling. Can we get carpool drivers to shut off their
engines?
