ENERGY

In 2007, HDR, a large architectural firm located in Dallas conducted a walk-through of the Greenhill School campus (courtesy Tom Marking, a Greenhill parent). The purpose of the walk through was to initiate an energy audit for the school.  An energy audit, which can be costly, can identify building systems that could be updated to increase energy efficiency and thereby reduce energy usage.  Such systems include boilers and chillers, HVAC systems, lighting controls, building automation controls, mechanical plumbing, and insulation.  It could also include such things as a display system alerting students and faculty to both campus-wide and building specific energy usage.

Although HDR’s summary of the walk through was not as comprehensive as an actual energy audit would be, it did provide a general overview of the areas on which Greenhill should focus.  Based on their recomendations, the Energy Group wil continue to work on the following initiatives:

  • Evaluate firms that can provide an energy audit at a reasonable cost.

  • Investigate options Greenhill has to convert to clean energy while conserving energy at the same time,

  • Pursuing the development of a small solar project that can eventually lead to a larger solar project for the School.

  • Investigate the feasibility of recycling kitchen oil, which can be converted to such products as bio-diesel.

  • Facilitate an educational program for the student body, alumni, and parents.
