Holiday concert rings of multicultural traditions

by Royal Gamber, Reviews Editor

Thirty-one years ago, Phil Foote, former Headmaster, sat down to play piano for one of the very first holiday concerts.

On Dec. 16, Michael Manes, fine arts department chair, will take on the same role as all divisions of the music department come together and perform for the entire school before the students depart on their winter break.

The musical lineup corresponds with the winter holidays. Singers, band, and Strings will encompass all of the major religions in their performance, which will range from classic Christmas carols to songs from ancient Indian heritage.

“Unlike many other concerts, the winter holiday concert has a very relaxed atmosphere. It is a sing along type environment where everyone can come together and enjoy the holiday spirit,” said Mr. Manes.

The holiday concert is one of the many longstanding school traditions, dating back ever since Mr. Manes can remember.

“Although I don’t really think about or get into it that much, it would just seem different if there was no concert,” said freshman Patrick Rochelle.

While the concert serves to entertain a student and faculty audience, some musicians find that they actually enjoy the experience themselves.

“I think I actually have more fun playing in the concert than I would if I was watching it because the attentions on us and the audience is actually getting into the music with us,” said junior Matt McCrary.

The concert tries to bring the school together one last time in the spirit of the holidays before everyone leaves for the break, Dec. 17 to Jan. 2.
