Boys’ basketball shoots to improve

By Margaux Fritz, MS Staff Writer

Winter is upon us and the eighth grade boy’s basketball team is eager for the start of a fresh season. In general, the team has had a successful history.

“Last year we were very strong at the beginning of the season, and when we hit the half way point we had won the majority of our games. But towards the end of the season, our intensity broke down and we started to lose,” eighth grader David Zale said.

Although the team had a strong season last year, they are hoping to improve their record this season

“Some of the teams main goals are to work hard, to prepare for junior varsity (JV) and try to achieve an undefeated season,” eighth grader Sean Kirkpatrick said.

David also mentioned that they have lost several players from last season, and one of their main goals is to unify the new and old players as a well-rounded team.
Sean said that although they never have had a large team in the past, their success came from playing together since fourth grade.

“In the past we’ve known who brought what on the court, and we need to become close enough as a team to figure that out again,” said Sean about their new team of nine players.

The team is determined to have an undefeated season, they will have to work hard against their rivals from last year.

“You would think our biggest rival is St. Marks, and they definitely bring competition, but our biggest rival is Covenant Christian,” sean said.
The team has been preparing for the season every day in practice. A typical practice is challenging and intense.
“Basically we start each day with lay-ups and fast-break drills and then work on practice plays. To finish up, we run sprints to help get us conditioned,” eighth grader Nick Barber said.

The team has been working hard and is becoming physically and mentally prepared for their upcoming season. The eighth grade boys’ basketball team is eager for the season to begin and are confident that they will achieve their goals as well as have a successful winter season. The team won their first home again against home school. Currently their record is 2-2. On Dec. 5, the boys won against the Episcopal School of Dallas in a close game.
