Community
graciously welcomes evacuees with open
hearts, minds
On the first assembly of the year,
Head of School Scott Griggs spoke to
Upper School students about the
importance of this year’s theme,
community. Ironically, the theme
undertook a new meaning just days later,
when students, displaced as a result of
Hurricane Katrina, applied to Greenhill.

Many of the students have come to the
city with little other than a change of
clothes and a few possessions. In the
past weeks, they have had to adjust to a
new home, school, classmates, and
clothes. Yet, in light of their
misfortune, the temporary visiting
students have maintained a positive
attitude, and are already vastly
contributing to the community. In just a
few weeks, they are already becoming
vocal leaders in the classrooms,
contributing to the fine arts, and
having a visible impact on the playing
field. Veteran students have helped immensely
with the transition and have stepped up
to show their resolve in the community.
Whether giving directions to classes,
giving them advice, or becoming a
designated “buddy” to the displaced
students, the community is helping in
whatever way it can. In addition, we want to congratulate
faculty and administrators for their
swift and selfless action in adjusting
to the additional students.
Administrators provided over $30,000 for
their books, tuition and lunches free of
cost, which is a significant feat
considering the amount of money raised
for the Upper School addition. The
faculty has helped with this task by
adjusting lesson plans and classroom
material.\ In the first few weeks of school, the
community has come together in a
powerful fashion. The Evergreen would
like to thank members of the school for
doing their part in facilitating the
transition during these trying times. We
have no doubts that this attitude can
continue throughout the year.
