Staff Editorial: Does safety limit freedom on campus?

The recent shootings on the Virginia Tech campus have many of us wondering and debating if this terrible tragedy could have been prevented. Immediately following the shootings, security "experts" began suggesting campus procedures to help prevent such attacks. These procedures included such measures as keeping building doors locked from the outside at all times, installing metal detectors, armed security guards, ID-swiping machines with pass-through turnstiles, and even more attention toward "loners."  read more
