Coach Boyd Grayson back | home | Greenhill

Mr. Grayson always knew that science was his life. Whether he was collecting rocks or taking his toys apart on Christmas morning, just to see how they worked, Mr. Grayson could not ignore that science was deep in his blood.

Giving up the best job in the world of selling cokes at Dallas Cowboys games, Mr. Grayson moved to the “Hub City” (Lubbock to you non-Texans) and graduated from Texas Tech University. Go Red Raiders! He graduated with a bachelor’s in Geology in 1980 while studying just about every type of science imaginable.

In 1981, Mr. Grayson met and then married the “greatest girl in the world,” Tami Gordon. They set out to make their mark on the world in West Virginia. He learned quickly that he was not going to be millionaire (or even a “thousandaire”) working in the oil business as a geologist and turned to education.

Mr. Grayson started teaching at Jackson Prep in Mississippi and had a bimonthly science trivia radio show. Then he made his way back “home” to Dallas and joined the Greenhill faculty in 2001, where he became the sixth grade science teacher and Div. B & C Science Olympiad Head Coach.

Mr. Grayson and his competitive spirit brought the Science Olympiad to Greenhill in 2002. In their first competition the “Vespula maculatae” (scientific name for hornet) placed 9th out of 32 teams in Division “B” from the state of Texas. They also placed 10th or better in 12 of the 23 events, while receiving a gold and bronze medal. And if this was not enough, Greenhill took home the spirit award. This award had been won by the same team four years in a row.

In their first year Greenhill earned a gold medal in the Robo-Billiards event, where they set a new state record. At the national level, Greenhill would have won a bronze medal in this event. This is an impressive showing considering the team had only been put together three months before the competition.

Mr. Grayson looks to build upon the team's success in the upcoming years. His goals are to remain competitive and to one day compete at the national level.

2008 Update: In our seventh year... the Division C team is the highest ranked private school in the state of Texas and the Division B team has placed 4th or better at state 3 of the last 4 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Grayson reside in McKinney, TX. They spend their spare time on home improvement and Mr. Grayson is still trying to turn his wife into a “Dallas Cowboy Fan”, with no luck at all.
