Taijiquan as Qigong: Developing the Subtle Core

Taijiquan (also t’ai chi ch’uan) defiles exact description. It is a martial art. It is a type of meditation. Much like dance, it coordinates body and mind through complex movement. It is also mobility therapy, increasingly prescribed as we age. In this course, we will explore taijiquan as a type of qigong. Qigong is a set of practices yoking together one’s attention, breathing, and movement. It is yogic (“yoke” and “yoga” being cognate). Taijiquan, in all its forms, is qigong, and we will explore its movements, hoping to open door onto some of its mysteries.
Sessions: 8 weekly 90-minute classes
Dates: 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11/13, 11/20, 11/27
Day & Time: Tuesdays, 6:30 pm
Cost: $200
Limit: 8 participants

Warren Frerichs has lived, studied, and taught in Taiwan, mainland China, Japan, and Korea. He has studied several styles of taijiquan with a number of different teachers. He currently teaches Chinese language and courses in East Asian studies at Greenhill.
